The COVID-19 pandemic was officially announced on in March of 2020, and immediately after, conspiracy theories about the pandemic spread rapidly through social media sites. The general idea according to conspiracists on the internet was that the virus was part of a strategy “conceived by global elites — such as Bill Gates — to roll out vaccinations with tracking chips that would later be activated by 5G, the technology used by cellular networks” (NPR.org).
